Construction Cabinet

The Construction Cabinet is part of a new series of storytelling pieces exploring crises facing humanity. It’s narrative focuses on the climate crisis and how we as a society pinned our hopes and growth on concrete whilst neglecting the sustainable, versatile and traditional building material that is wood.

Made to represent buildings under construction the materials tell the tale of tradition in building through oak casework and the ability of newer technologies like thermal modification, in this case thermally modified Sycamore to change how we approach building and how we can better use under utilised species. The moon represents our dreams of growth facilitated by concrete whilst discarding timber in the form of embedded fossilised wood from the English Channel.

Dotted throughout are examples of traditional joinery, like handcut dovetails accompanied by cutouts to show the internal construction of the piece. Functional details designed to bring a connection back to how we work with wood.

The clean architectural inspired facade hides a functional interior with a series of playful pivot and rocker operated drawers and doors. The lowermost drawer is opened via the operation of the crane at the top of the building by way of a catch connected to the cranes cable.

This cabinet was designed to convey a serious message within a functional piece. The playful, kinetic element intended to make it more intriguing and approachable than the usual barrage of doom and gloom that often puts people off discussing these topics.
